Before I got used to it, and because I never wanted to be a teacher (no shade to teachers), when people asked me this in college, I’d be confused. They may as well have asked me what I’d had for dinner the night before, like:
Me: I’m an English major. Them: Oh cool, so you want to be an English teacher? Me: What does that have to do with anything?
(Quiiiick s/o to all the other cool jobs English majors can do.)
